In a world where the phrase “Thank God it’s Friday” has become a mantra, it’s easy to see how we’ve conditioned ourselves to view weekdays as mere hurdles to overcome before the weekend. However, this mindset can lead to a life where we only truly live two out of seven days each week. The truth is that every day holds potential for joy, fulfillment, and growth. So, in the past few weeks, I’ve asked myself, “How can we shift our perspective to savor each day, Monday through Sunday?”

Here are some thoughts that came up through my daily journal:

1. Start with Purposeful Mornings

How we start our day can set the tone for the entire day. Incorporating a morning routine that includes activities like breathwork, meditation, or a brisk walk can create a sense of calm and focus. Taking a few moments to set intentions and reflect on what you are grateful for can infuse your day with positivity from the get-go.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to allow time for a calming activity.
  • Choose one mindfulness practice (e.g., meditation, journaling, breath work) and commit to it daily. I use a free app called InsightTimer.
  • Write down three things you are grateful for each morning.
  • Create a not-to-do list. Here is some inspiration.

2. Align Your Work with Your Passion

One of the main reasons people dread weekdays is because they feel disconnected from their work. To counter this, seek ways to align your work with your passions and values. If you cannot change jobs, look for opportunities within your current role to engage in projects that excite you or learn new skills you’re passionate about.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Identify one project or task at work that excites you and seek more involvement in it.
  • Discuss with your manager ways to incorporate your passions into your current role.
  • Enroll in an online course to develop a skill you’re passionate about.

3. Break the Routine

Monotony can make weekdays drag. Introducing small changes to your daily routine can create a sense of novelty and excitement. Try a new coffee shop, take a different route to work, or schedule time for hobbies you enjoy. These small shifts can break the routine and bring fresh energy to your weekdays.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Plan a new activity for lunch breaks, such as a walk in a nearby park.
  • Rearrange your workspace to refresh your environment.
  • Schedule a weekly hobby night to explore a new interest.

4. Foster Connections

Human connections are a significant source of happiness. Make time to connect with colleagues, friends, or family during the week. A quick chat, a shared lunch, or a collaborative project can make your day more enjoyable and fulfilling. Building and nurturing relationships at work can transform your environment into a more supportive and engaging space.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Schedule regular coffee or lunch meetings with colleagues.
  • Initiate a team-building activity or social event at work.
  • Reach out to a friend or family member each day to check in and chat or simply share how much you appreciate them.

5. Practice Mindfulness and Presence

Often, we get so caught up in the rush of daily tasks that we forget to be present. Practicing mindfulness can help you stay in the moment and appreciate the small joys of each day. Being present can enhance your overall well-being, whether it’s savoring a cup of tea, enjoying a beautiful sunset, or fully engaging in a conversation.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Set reminders throughout the day to pause and take a few deep breaths.
  • Dedicate time to a daily mindfulness practice, such as mindful eating or walking.
  • Use a mindfulness app to guide you through short meditations.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledging and celebrating small achievements throughout the week can boost your morale and make each day feel significant. I call this “collect evidence.” Whether it’s completing a task, helping a colleague, or learning something new, take a moment to recognize your efforts and accomplishments.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Keep a daily journal to note down small wins and accomplishments.
  • Share your achievements with a friend, mentor, or team.
  • Reward yourself with a small treat or activity that you enjoy.

7. Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care shouldn’t be reserved for the weekend. Incorporate activities that nurture your body and mind into your daily routine. This could be anything from a relaxing bath to reading a book to exercising or simply taking a few moments to breathe and relax. I meditate and journal each morning, and my days are usually more enjoyable because of it. Prioritizing self-care ensures you recharge regularly, preventing burnout and promoting sustained well-being.

Recommended Action Steps:

  • Schedule daily self-care activities in your calendar.
  • Create a self-care checklist to ensure you incorporate these activities into your routine.
  • Experiment with different self-care practices to find what works best for you.

So, Why Not Reframe Your Mindset Today?

Ultimately, enjoying every day requires a shift in mindset. By actively seeking joy, purpose, and fulfillment in our daily lives, we can transform our weekdays into meaningful and enjoyable experiences. Instead of counting down the days to Friday (which I hate doing), let’s consciously try to live fully and joyfully every day. Life is too short to only live for the weekends; let’s embrace each day with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Here’s to finding joy in every day and making the most of every moment.

Salud!
