Breaking Out of the Box with Elaine Montilla – Episode 003
Delighted to share this amazing conversation with Steve Vannoy. His Podcast is called Soul and Stories and I had the privilege to chat with him for a bit about a few of the major lessons I’ve learned while being a minority living in New York. I am beyond excited to be able to touch more souls and hope to help others in knowing that they are not alone, that we are all in this together, and we can share our knowledge to help those coming behind us and dealing with the same issues I’ve dealt with in the past years.
Super excited to take you with me on this journey. I have a total of 15 lessons I share and my goal is that at least one of them resonates with you. I know that it is not always easy to speak your truth but if more of us dare to do it, we give others permission to do it too and not be afraid. I want to do that for you. I want to highlight my imperfections and show you how beautiful they are… and yours too. I believe that wholeheartedly.
In this episode, you will learn a lot more about me and how Steve and I connected while attending the most awesome summer camp called Camp Good Life Project(GLP). I came to this country at the age of 16 from The Dominican Republic speaking no English whatsoever and made a decision to better myself and come out of all of the boxes society was putting me into. I share practical lessons that I’ve learned in the years I’ve lived in New York City as an immigrant and someone who belongs to multiple minority groups. I also shared the books and people that have been my savior in the past few years including Dr. Brene Brown’s Braving the Wilderness and The 5 Second Rule from Mel Robbins. Honestly, I would not be who I am today without the help from these authors I mentioned but also the countless hours watching videos and reading books from Eckhart Tolle, Oprah, Jonathan Fields, Wayne Dyer, Robin Sharma, and many others I will showcase in the weekly book recommendations here.
My goal is that you can see yourself in me and relate to the stories I share. You need to know that anything is possible if we do the internal work first and stop the conditioned thinking we were raised with, which most times holds us captive. What I invite you to do is keep an open mind at all times, don’t be afraid to question everything, and surround yourself with people who will lift you, not judge you, and want nothing but the best for you without expecting anything in return.
