Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) was founded as a call to action to raises awareness about the need to elevate computer science education at all levels and to underscore the critical role of computing in all careers. Expanding access to computer science – for all – is why initiatives like CSEdWeek are so important. Together, we can work to ensure any young person who wants to learn critical computational skills or go on to study computer science in community college or university has these options. And, in just an hour, we can start them on a journey where they gain the skills and knowledge needed to pursue their passions in our increasingly digital world. Technolochicas is partnering with Microsoft to celebrate this event and as an ambassador, I will take part in a Q&A session to talk about women in tech.
Come celebrate Computer Science Education Week with this free two-hour workshop where participants 8+ use block coding to create a video game with MakeCode Arcade. Students learn fundamental game and coding concepts—like sprites, variables, and coordinates—and use their new skills to create and customize a playable game.
By the end of the workshop, students will have:
- Learned and used key game design and coding concepts
- Shared their games with a partner for inspiration
- Published their game via URL so they can continue to play and develop it after the workshop
They will meet me, Elaine Montilla, a mentor who works in technology and find out that a successful career in technology is within their reach.
TechnolochicasECHNOLOchicas is a national initiative of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and Televisa Foundation designed to raise awareness among young Latinas and their families about opportunities and careers in technology. TECHNOLOchicas uses the powerful stories of Latinas from diverse backgrounds, who are in technology fields, and recognize the power of innovation to change the world. These stories allow girls to see and relate to real-life role models.
